![]() ![]() Stratemeyer would dream up a new series, write a 3-page outline for each volume, and then turn over the outline to a contract writer to finish. Both decisions proved to be wildly successful. The first was to ask his publishers to lower the price of his books from about $1.25 to 50 cents each and the second, spurred by overwhelming demand, was to hire other writers to flesh out his ideas. ![]() In The Secret of the Stratemyer Syndicate: Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and the Million Dollar Fiction Factory, Carol Billman writes that Stratemeyer was in the midst of “The Rover Boys,” “The Outdoor,” “Deep Sea,” and other series, when he took two major steps around 1906. ![]() What mattered most was that the product should possess a certain distinctive feel, and yet remain consistent from book to book. His central-and perhaps unsettling-insight was that, when it came to series fiction, it didn’t matter who in particular wrote the stories. He had sold several dime novels and was already a prolific writer himself before he hit on what was to become his hit-generating, money-making formula. Stratemeyer, the son of German immigrants, was born and lived in New Jersey. ![]() ![]() ![]() How he solved it, and how it seemed to solve him, is detailed below. ![]() The famous mustache is gone! The reason for its shaving is, of course, one aspect that gives the murder mystery at the heart of Nile some depth. Yet when we see that same solitary figure again at the end of Death on the Nile, and as he watches Salome Otterbourne (Sophie Okonedo) sing a jazzy torch number in a London nightclub, he looks markedly different. Minus an opening sequence flashback set during the First World War, this is even how we’re introduced to Hercule in the 1930s. In both Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and this spring’s Death on the Nile, he sits alone at a table, accompanied by no one except his thoughts. It’s something we’ve seen Hercule Poirot do a lot across Kenneth Branagh’s two big screen adaptations of Agatha Christie mysteries. This article contains Death on the Nile spoilers. ![]() ![]() ![]() I think this was predominantly because Hardinge had not given them any specific defining features, physically and internally. The climax was near the last section of the novel, and it was amazing – there were mountains of suspense and the air was cracking from the tension.Īt several points I was overwhelmed by the amount of middle-aged male characters, and kept confusing them in my mind. The characters developed wonderfully, and by the end they were overflowing with rich desires and feelings. ![]() Having said that, it was written cleverly, and it always appeared to me that the plot had flourished and grew on it’s own that it wasn’t the outcome of some author’s toil. The book progresses massively in style for me the opening scene was excruciatingly bland but as I trudged on further through the chapters, I was rewarded. However, at times I felt like the writing was very heavy and over-bearing to read, making it a slightly painful experience, because I always had to be concentrating to fully understand what was going on, and felt I couldn’t always relax into the novel. As soon as I started reading I felt enveloped by the dense words and was transported into Faith’s peculiar 19th century world. And then they gain power, morphing into a life of their own, and are soon unstoppable. ![]() ![]() ![]() She's beautiful, refined, and ripe for seduction. ![]() ![]() Suddenly he'll brave sharks, fire, storm, and sea just to keep her at his side.
